Headaches In MG Patients Should Be Treated - Researchers Say
Many myasthenia gravis patients often complain that they have headaches. But, there hasn't been much in the way of studies on the relation between chronic headaches and myasthenia gravis (MG). So, doctors at the Department of Neurology, School of Medicine, at Keio University in Japan conducted a clinical study aimed to discover if MG symptoms affect the development or worsening of chronic headache.
In the study of the participating 184 myasthenia
gravis patients who were followed at the MG clinics, tension-type headache was observed in 71 (38.6%) patients and 9 (4.9%) complained of migraine. Twenty-five (13.6%) said that a headache appeared or was worsened after the MG onset. It was found that women complained of headache that was associated with myasthenia gravis far more than men. Statistical analyses showed that females and mild ocular symptoms were independently predictive of headache associated with MG. The results of the study indicate that the treatment of chronic headache should be required to improve the quality of life in MG patients.
1. Introduction
One of the most common neurological symptoms is headache. Researchers at Keio University noticed that a number of myasthenia gravis (MG) patients complain of headache more than the known MG-related symptoms. So, it could be interpreted that the headaches could have a more negative impact on the quality of daily life than the traditionally reported MG symptoms. Researchers noticed that certain MG symptoms seemed to affect the development or worsening of headache, and yet there have been only been a handful of reports that were concerned with headaches in MG patients. On the other hand, some major neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, have been reported to be associated with headache. In this paper, to investigate the relationship between headache and MG, we examined whether each of the MG symptoms could be a cause of headache in MG patients.
